Pokémon types in the card game: Weakness and Resistance
Updated on 15/10/2026👁 1 reader

Weakness: double damage
At the bottom left of every Pokémon is its Weakness. If it's attacked by a Pokémon of that type, damage is doubled: a 120-damage attack becomes 240, enough to Knock Out many Pokémon ex.

Resistance: −30 damage
Some Pokémon have a Resistance: when a Pokémon of that type attacks them they take 30 less damage. These are often Metal Pokémon and flying ones.
The most common Weaknesses
| Defender's type | Typical Weakness |
|---|---|
| Grass | Fire |
| Fire | Water |
| Water | Lightning (or Grass) |
| Lightning | Fighting |
| Fighting | Psychic (or Grass) |
| Darkness | Grass (or Fighting) |
| Metal | Fire |
| Dragon | none |
How to use them in your deck
A single-type deck is simpler, because all the Energy is the same. A second type, even with just one Pokémon, lets you hit the Weakness of the most popular decks. If your main attacker is weak to a widely played type, keep a different backup attacker ready.
