Pokémon Energy cards: basic, special and gold (and how many to put in your deck)
Updated on 16/10/2026

Basic Energy
The simplest cards in the game: each provides one Energy of its type. On current cards there are eight types, the same as the Pokémon types except Dragon and Colorless: Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, Fighting, Darkness and Metal. You can put as many as you like in your deck.
Special Energy
They have an extra effect: they provide several types, protect the Pokémon, come back from the discard pile. In exchange you can only run 4 copies per name, and many game effects target them.
| Basic Energy | Special Energy | |
|---|---|---|
| Copies in the deck | No limit | At most 4 per name |
| Effect | Provides one Energy of its type | Has an extra effect written on the card |
| In Japanese | 基本エネルギー | 特殊エネルギー |
How much Energy in a deck
A 60-card deck usually has between 8 and 14 Energy: fewer if attacks are cheap or you have cards that search for Energy, more if they're expensive. All the details are in how to build a deck.
Collectible Energy
In the Japanese Scarlet & Violet sets some Basic Energy came out in gold (UR)versions, among the set's secret cards. They cost far less than SARs but are beautiful and rare: some people collect them all, one per type.
