How to sell Pokémon cards: value them, photograph them and ship them safely

1. Know what you have

First identify the card: name, set, number and rarity, all printed at the bottom left. For Japanese cards the guide to reading them and the one on rarities will help.

2. Set the price

Search for the same card, in the same language and similar condition, and look at completed sales: that's the price cards actually change hands at. What pushes value up or down is explained in how much a Pokémon card is worth.

3. Assess condition honestly

Sharp corner and worn corners compared (simulation)
Corners, back edges and surface decide the condition. On the left a real, sharp corner; in the middle and on the right simulated wear.

Listing a card as Near Mint when it has a white corner is the quickest way to get a return. Use the scale in the guide to card condition and, when in doubt, choose the lower grade.

4. Photos that sell

  • front and back, on a plain background;
  • natural light or a side lamp, without glare hiding the surface;
  • a close-up of the corners and of any flaws;
  • never photos from the web: buyers want to see the card they'll receive.
