Hammer prices as reported by auction houses and the press (US dollars, including fees where stated). The first two bars are not to scale. Japanese cards in dark orange.

1. Pikachu Illustrator: the record-breaking card

In 1998 the Japanese magazine CoroCoro ran a drawing contest: the winners received a special card, the Pikachu Illustrator, with a Pikachu holding pens and the word "Illustrator" instead of "Trainer". Only a few dozen copies are known and just one graded PSA 10, which in February 2026 was sold at auction by Goldin for $16,492,000 including fees: the most expensive Pokémon card ever.

2. The Japanese trophy cards

Right after it come more Japanese cards: the Pikachu trophy cardsgiven to the top finishers of official tournaments in Japan in the late '90s (No.1 Trainer, No.2, No.3). They exist in tiny numbers and change hands for hundreds of thousands of dollars, or millions.

3. 1st Edition Charizard

The most famous card of the English edition: the Base Set holo Charizard with the "Edition 1" stamp. A PSA 10 sold for $550,000 in December 2025. But watch out: the grade makes the price. The same Charizard in poor shape is worth a small fraction of that.

4. The other legends

CardWhy it's rare
Prerelease RaichuVery few copies printed as a test, with the Prerelease stamp
Topsun Charizard (1995)Japanese card from a candy brand, from before the card game itself
Blastoise PresentationPrototype used to present the game to Western publishers
Kangaskhan Family EventPrize from a Japanese parent-and-child tournament (1998)

Why they're worth so much

  • Few copies: prizes, print proofs, limited editions.
  • Even fewer in perfect condition: among existing copies, the grade-10 ones are a handful.
  • Nostalgia: people who were kids in the '90s collect today.
  • The Pokémon: Pikachu and Charizard are always worth more than the rest.
